Pictorial // Liverpool @ Light Night

Mein Herr and I weathered the rain last night. Although we didn’t get into the Polly Morgan talk (it was already full @ 6.40pm), the Big Voice at the Anglican Cathedral and especially our visit to the top of the Liverpool Radio City Tower made up for it.

The views were breathtaking.

Coming up // Light Night Liverpool 2012

Light Night, one of Liverpool’s finest art events is fast approaching. This year may even be bigger and better than 2011.

And just in case you didn’t know most of the events are free and start around 7pm. So, you’ll have plenty of time to go home and grab a bite to eat. I’ve listed a few of my personal highlights below:

1. Polly Morgan – Live and Stuffing!

She’s one of my favourite artists and I am beyond excited that I’ll get a chance to see her & her work. Last year, I’ve published a post about Polly  but who knows, maybe this year I’ll even get to snap a picture of her live and in colour for you.

Details

  • Free entry, 7pm to 8.30pm
  • Victoria Gallery & Museum, University of Liverpool, Ashton St, Off Brownlow Hill, L69 3DR

2. Light Night Polaroid Pop-Up Studio

Liverpool’s Open Eye Gallery has come up with a fantastic idea to create some very personal souvenirs of this memorable night. There’ll be a Polaroid pop-up studio set up by The Impossible Project’s Tom White.

Details

  • Free entry, galleries open until 10pm
  • Main Exhibition: Richard Mosse
  • Archive Exhibition: Simon Norfolk
  • Wall Work: Emily Speed
  • Open Eye Gallery, 19 Mann Island, Liverpool Waterfront, Liverpool L3 1BP (opposite Liverpool ONE’s One Park West apartment block)

3. The Big Voice – Liverpool Anglican Cathedral

If you enjoy singing and would like to give it a go outside your bathroom, then The Big Voice at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral might be a good place to be. I missed last year’s as there is always so much to do on Light Night in Liverpool. However, I’d really like to go this year. It all sounds quite promising. Rumour has is that it is going to be more about contemporary music rather than gospels.

4. Red Wire Open Studio Art Fair

I’m really curious about this one. I’ve never been to Red Wire before but the title sounds promising. Hopefully there will be some good zines to flick through and maybe a new piece of art to take home with me.

Details

  • Free entry, 7.30pm – 11.30pm
  • Red Wire Art Studio, Carlisle Building, 69 Victoria St, L1 6DE

5. Light & Sound – LightNight Afterparty

And just to finish off a great night, the Kazimier Krunk Band has been hired to entertain at the Light Night afterparty at the Liverpool Academy of Arts. There is also talk about a light show. On top of that, Clinic DJs will play a blend of funk, psychedelica and dance classics.

If it’s anything like the Krunk parties, then this should be a brilliant finish.

Details

  • Free entry, 0.30am – 4am
  • Liverpool Academy of Arts, 32 Seel St, L1 4BE (rear of building at Wolstenholme Square – near The Kazimier)

PS. I’ve decided to take my bike. That way I can get quickly from A to B and hopefully – fingers crossed – get to do all the things I want to do. Hope you have a good night!

Collectables // Praktica MTL 5 SLR

Yesterday, my parents surprised me with their very first camera. A Praktica MTL 5 SLR.

Praktica MTL 5, Carl Zeiss, camera, Pentacon, vintage camera, GDR, SLR

This solid 27-year-old camera is still in pretty good condition. It comes with a case and two lenses. One Multi Coating Pentacon auto 2.8/29 and a Pancolar auto 1.8/50 MC lens by Carl Zeiss.

The Praktica MTL 5 was originally manufactured in East Germany between 1983 and 1985 by Pentacon. It is a 35mm SLR featuring TTLexposure metering, self-timer, a shutter button on the front of the camera (not on the top) and a mercury battery. The film speed depends on the lift and rotation of the shutter speed dial.

Imagine what it must have been like to buy one of these. Back in 1980s East Germany a SLR like this one cost someone half of his salary. In fact, this Praktica camera was priced at approx. 400 to 600 Ost-Mark  with the average East German worker only earning about 700 to 800 Ost-Mark (gross salary) a month!

Anyway, I am very keen on going to our local camera shop and asking them for a film. I hope to take some pictures whilst I am here. If it all works out, you will find them on here soon. Fingers crossed.

Spotted // Infra by Richard Mosse, Open Eye Gallery

The following images were taken as part of Infra, a project by Irish photographer, Richard Mosse.

Between 2010 and 2011 Mosse travelled to the eastern regions of Congo. There he took pictures of local rebel groups, particularly focussing on the life between massacre and violence, sexual harassment and political power plays.

Mosse used a Kodak Aerochrome film, a special type of infrared colour film, for his project. I felt quite overwhelmed by the narrative of this exhibition, not only because of the scenes Mosse had picked, but also because of the vivid, partially “blood red” colours and their emoting effects.

Infra is currently hosted at the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool. The exhibition will close on 10th June.

Pinterest // Beautiful Home Decor

I wish I had a bigger flat to decorate with all of these beautiful furnishings. I love cosy, yet minimal airy home decor. Less clutter, more quality. Here is a selection of my Pinterest home decor ideas. When I look at them, I feel really inspired to move things around and redecorate some of the corners in my current flat.

P.S. You may notice the bedroom theme. I am a sucker for a romantic bedroom and even a bigger one for a nice, comfy down bed…

Pictorial // Introducing Little Giant Girl’s Uncle

Hi everyone, here are some shots that I took of the Giant Uncle during Liverpool’s Sea Odyssey last Saturday. He “jumped” over the Chinese Arch and then walked off towards Stanley Park. The whole event took about an hour and was quite impressive. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the Little Giant Girl as the finale on Sunday started earlier than originally planned.

Shopping // Fashion Finds from Total Recall and H&M Liverpool

There is no better day to do some relaxed shopping in Liverpool than on the day of the Grand National. One can simply enjoy a Saturday morning without any elbowing or pushing through masses of shopaholics. And so I went on a little mission to fill my wardrobe with colours & patterns, just in time for spring.

My retail therapy session involved a stop at the vintage & cyberpunk store, Total Recall which is currently located in the basement of Liverpool Quiggin’s aka Grand Central and at H&M (I’ll never change.). This is what I ended up with.

No. 1 “1960s punk rock girl scarf” (£8)

No. 2 – “tassel love”(£10)

>> Total Recall, Grand Central on Renshaw Street, Liverpool.

No. 3 “classic sailor” (£12.99)

No. 4 “soft & simple” (£7.99)

>> H&M, Church Street, Liverpool.

Spotted // Photography Wunderkind Katie Eleanor

The following collection of pictures showcases the young portrait photographer, Katie Eleanor – my current “creative” girl crush.

Despite her tender age of 19 years, Katie has already established herself in the international arts scene, snapping pictures for independent publications such as Ponyanarchy, or the well-known Jackson-based Audrey Grace Boutique at its Wendybird shoot.

She describes her work as “creating dreamscapes”. I find them to be both, surreal and beautiful in composition with rich but not too overpowering colours. In my eyes, this 19-year-old wunderkind from Kent is definitely one to watch this year.

Little Giant Girl to visit Liverpool

For the last two weeks, the news about the Little Giant Girl / puppet who will be visiting Liverpool from 20th to 22nd April, has been going around town.

The Royal De Luxe, a famous street theatre company, is going to tell the tale Sea Odyssey (fitting right into the Titanic theme and may be just as cheesy?!). As part of this tale, the Little Giant Girl is going to go around several places in North Liverpool and the city centre. The whole event is going to last approximately three days and if you were thinking about taking the car into town, you might want to think again because the City Council is going to temporarily close central roads in the light of this occasion.

Maybe it will match the much talked about 50ft mechanical spider by La Machine in 2008. So far I am not too sure whether to be excited or scared. When I look this puppet, Bride of Chucky keeps on popping into my head…

Pictorial // Spring in the Georgian Quarter 1.0

Last week I was lucky to be have my first go at a Canon 500d with a 50mm F/1.8 lens. It was definitely exhausting to come home after work, get fed and ready to go in time for sunset but every bit of it was worth it. (Even the sweat-drenching trip on my bike. Duke Street can be a b****.)

I hope you enjoy my pictures and if you have not been to Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter yet, I hope you will reconsider coming. P.S. My boyfriend helped me with the cemetery shoot – it would not be right to take all the credit here myself. ;)
